Valentine’s Day tech gifts for him and her

Valentine’s Day tech gifts for him and her

By Kelly Montgomery | Content provided by Digital Trends

Gifts are always tricky in relationships, and no holiday makes that more obvious than good old Valentine's Day. Standbys like jewelry, flowers, chocolates, and cards will usually do the trick, but if you really want to impress the one you love, we advise giving them something a little more thoughtful than a heart-shaped box of sugary sweets.

Valentine's gifts can be even scarier if the date comes in the beginning stages of a relationship. If you've only been dating a short time, giving her a diamond necklace  or  him plane tickets six months in advance could get you in trouble, or at least provoke an awkward moment. If you want your Valentine's Day celebration to have a tech spin, we've got you covered on both bases. We've narrowed down a long list to our favorite romantic tech gifts for every price range and stage of relationship. It's a no-brainer.

Got an unwanted gift card? Sell it!

(RNN) - Did you get a gift card to Bass Pro Shop from a well-meaning aunt and you're a member of PETA? Instead of re-gifting it, why not sell it?

Sites like Cardpool and Plastic Jungle pay consumers cash for their unwanted gift cards. Users receive a percentage of the card's value, usually anywhere from 70 to 96 percent, depending on the retailer.

For instance, Plastic Jungle will pay up to 87.15 percent for an Old Navy gift card and up to 96.6 percent for a Walmart or Target gift card.

It isn't only turkey that people look forward to when Thanksgiving arrives. Thanksgiving is also the time of year when most Americans look toward the holiday season, and many take to the frenzied stores on "Black Friday" to take advantage of the deep discounts that many retailers offer. According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), the average American spent $365.34 on Black Friday in 2010 with overall sales adding up to $45 billion. The NRF states that was an increase of $22.03 from the 2009 average of $343.31. According to the NRF, there was also an increase in the number of Black Friday shoppers in 2010 with approximately 212 million people heading out to the malls, which was up from the 2009 figure of 195 million.

The national retailer hopes that Black Friday shoppers will not only purchase gifts for their family and friends, but also help benefit the Salvation Army. jcpenny will donate $50 for every Angel Giving Tree angel adopted at jcp.com/angel on Thanksgiving Day, and they will also donate $25 to the non-profit for every customer that checks in at jcpenney using Foursquare on Black Friday.

jcpenney has promised to donate a total of $500,000 to the Salvation Army this year. And to encourage some healthy competition, they will award the community with the most Foursquare check-ins with a celebratory shopping party Dec. 17. A food truck will be on site that day to provide light food and refreshments.
