Church offers trees to replace those lost in April storms

The Forest Lake Baptist Church is offering a variety of trees at no cost to Tuscaloosa County residents that may have lost trees during the April storms. Each family may claim two trees on a first come, first served basis Saturday, Jan. 7 from 8 a.m. until noon at the "Wings of Grace" diaster center, located at 107 18th St. in Tuscaloosa.

Residents must be able to transport the trees themselves and be prepared to present ID confirming their Tuscaloosa County residency and property location. Volunteers will be available to help plant the trees; please go to flbc.us to register for assistance. Trees cannot be planted underneath or power lines, and residents must call 811 at least three days before planting to have any underground utility lines marked.

The trees range in size from 10 to 25 gallons, or 8 to 15 feet in height. The following types of trees will be available for pick up:

Tuscaloosa City Hall holiday hours

City Hall will close at 4:00 p.m. today for the Christmas Holiday.  We will re-open at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, December 27.  Mayor Maddox and Incident Command are monitoring weather reports. If severe weather occurs, staff will be in place to address any issues.

City of Tuscaloosa Tree Commission hosts special “Tree Give Away”

 City of Tuscaloosa Tree Commission hosts special “Tree Give Away”

Tuscaloosa, Ala. – The City of Tuscaloosa Tree Commission will hold a special “Tree Give Away” in an effort to replace the many thousands of trees that were lost in the devastating tornado of April 27th, 2011. The free “baby” trees will be given away on Saturday, December 10th, 2011 at the Cherry Pavilion of Snow Hinton Park starting at 8:30 a.m. until all trees have been claimed.

Over 3,000 “baby” tree seedlings of the following varieties will be available at no cost:

  • Bald Cypress
  • Crepe Myrtle
  • Dogwood
  • Fringetree
  • Live Oak
  • Red Maple
  • Redbud
  • Sawtooth Oak
  • Southern Magnolia
  • Sugar Maple
  • White Oak

It is important to begin replacing the trees that were lost in Tuscaloosa as soon as possible as trees are an intricate part of providing a beautiful natural environment within the community.

Tuscaloosa Forward community meetings kick off

Tuscaloosa Forward community meetings kick off

Four community meetings for Tuscaloosa residents will be held Nov. 28 through Dec. 1, allowing citizens to give their input about the tornado recovery in the areas affected by the April 27 storms. The meetings will be held in a come-and-go style between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. each evening. The schedule is as follows:

TDOT will be sweeping the following areas the week of Nov. 28. Please refrain from parking on these streets so that sweepers may do a thorough job.

  • Metro Park, 60th St., Wakefield Drive, Southmont Drive, Valley View Circle (2-E)
  • Ridgeland, North Hampton, Riverchase, Wellington (3-D)
  • 26th Avenue East, Juanita Drive, 30th Avenue East, 8th Street East,
  • Crescent Gardens (5-B-2)
  • The Downs, Glendale Gardens, Hillcrest, Prince Avenue (7-C-1)
