Tuscaloosa leaders meet with local state delegates

Tuscaloosa city leaders met with local state delegates for breakfast Monday to discuss their needs before the new legislative session begins Tuesday. One of the main issues brought up was the need for more tornado relief funding for various areas of Tuscaloosa.

Grants awarded to domestic violence, rape response organizations

From the officer of Governor Robert Bentley:

MONTGOMERYGov. Robert Bentley has awarded two grants totaling $310,000 to ensure that domestic violence and rape victims receive appropriate and adequate assistance when they seek help from local agencies and organizations.

The Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence will use a $160,000 grant to support its Coordinated Community Response to Domestic Violence program. A $150,000 grant will help the Alabama Coalition Against Rape continue its Outreach and Services to Victims of Sexual Assault program. Both programs train the staff of local law enforcement agencies, health care organizations, courts and domestic violence shelters to recognize the signs of abuse and respond more effectively to domestic and dating violence as well as stalking.

Colonel Penny Huggins Bailey announces state congressional candidacy

LEEDS -- Retired USAF Colonel Penny Huggins Bailey announced her candidacy for Alabama’s 6th Congressional District today, bringing 24 years of leadership in the United States Air Force to the race against the eventual Republican nominee.

Penny Huggins Bailey is a longtime Leeds resident and graduate of Leeds High School and Samford University. She served in the US Air Force and retired at the rank of Colonel after 24 years of duty. Her husband, an active duty Air Force Colonel, will serve his third deployment overseas this year. The Baileys have been married for more than 30 years and have three children.

Grants given to help victims of abuse in Ala.

MONTGOMERY—Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded two grants totaling $32,002 to two nonprofit organizations that help meet the needs of victims of domestic violence and rape.

A $17,002 grant to the Alabama Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and a $15,000 grant to the Alabama Coalition Against Rape will help the agencies conduct training to help police, medical personnel and court staff identify the signs of domestic violence and rape.

“Helping victims of rape and domestic violence starts with being able to spot the signs of abuse,” Bentley said. “I commend both coalitions for their efforts to reduce the number of domestic violence and rape cases in our state and to aid those who have been victimized.”

Gov. Bentley awards grant to four drug task forces

MONTGOMERY Gov. Robert Bentley has awarded grants totaling $684,300 to combat illegal drugs and drug-related violent crime in 10 counties primarily in west Alabama.       

The funding will support four drug task forces that operate in Bibb, Dallas, Fayette, Hale, Lamar, Perry, Pickens, Shelby, Tuscaloosa and Wilcox counties. The task forces conduct undercover operations to arrest and prosecute drug offenders, find and dismantle dangerous methamphetamine laboratories and assist with other violent crime investigations.  

“We must remain aggressive in our battle against illegal drugs,” Bentley said. “I commend the agents of these drug task forces for their efforts to put the sellers and distributors of illegal drugs behind bars.”   

$4 Million Drainage Project Underway and On Track

Engineering for the $4 million Moody Swamp Tributary 3 Drainage Improvements Project for the City of Tuscaloosa is being finalized and construction is slated to commence in early 2012. Senator Richard Shelby (R-Ala) announced the $3 million FEMA Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant Program award on April 18, 2011, just before the devastating tornados hit Tuscaloosa. The project, consisting of 6 components, is expected to decrease the probability of flooding in the Moody Swamp Tributary 3 basin. The basin, home to several large businesses and numerous residences, has experienced recurrent flooding and damage as a result.
