BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC)- We hear it more and more these days to eat healthy, but eating healthy is not always the most affordable option. There is a new option for in the Tuscaloosa area for people who receive government assistance.

The Tuscaloosa River Market is back to its full two-day-a-week schedule, now that warmer weather is here and crops are starting to come in. This is also their first harvest season accepting the Electronic Benefit Transfer Program.

The EBT government assistance cards are good for pretty much anything in the market, except for crafts. Aside from the fruits and vegetables you might expect, the Tuscaloosa River Market also has local farmers selling beef, pork and shrimp and vendors with homemade baked goods, jellies and honey. The manager of the River Market says if you have an EBT card, it is very simple to use at the river market.

TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC)- Demolition began today on an historic building on the University of Alabama campus. The Kilgore House, built in 1890, is the oldest building on campus.

The Kilgore House holds historical and personal significance to many on campus. It helped diversify the university from an all-male school to what it is today. In a few days time, it will be torn down.

When the backhoe tears out a chunk of the Kilgore House, it will take a piece of Rebecca Minder with it.

"We understand the passion of this house because of its history," Minder said.

She worked at the Kilgore House for the Alabama Heritage magazine. Minder returned Monday before crews started tearing it down to build a new student plaza.

Long before integration of the 60's, the house helped diversify the UA campus in 1905.

"We also had the women who were the first students on campus were here as well," she explained.

TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC)- A man was seriously injured after he fell out of the truck
he was driving and was possibly run over by it in Tuscaloosa, police say.

Tuscaloosa police responded around 2:07 p.m. Monday to the scene of an accident with injuries in the 1200 block of East Skyland Blvd.

A witness told police that the driver of a red Chevy Z71 truck was stopped in traffic in the westbound lane when he opened up his door and appeared to reach for something outside his truck. The man then fell out of the driver's seat but remained trapped in his seatbelt as the truck rolled forward. Police say the man was dragged by the vehicle before the seatbelt unbuckled and the truck possibly ran him over.

The driver-less truck then crossed several lanes of traffic, ran through a fence and struck an occupied room at the Days Inn, police said.
