Tuscaloosa walking trail would follow tornado's path | News

TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC)- A planned walking trail in Tuscaloosa will take visitors along the path of the April 27 tornado. The trail goes through the backyard of a church that is rebuilding from the tornado.

"I think we'll have a great City Walk. It'll tie us in with the community, allow the businesses and the church and surrounding community to function together," Hansel Stewart with Central Church of Christ said.

Central Church of Christ members agreed to allow a city walking trail along the tornado's path to cut through their property.

"We have worked hand in hand with the city, with the mayor, with this vision," Stewart said.

The first segment of the City Walk falls between the church and it's back parking lot.

Tonight, city councilors could hire contractors to build that biking and walking trail.

"We created a generational plan for recovery of this tornado and the object of this is to return Tuscaloosa to a state better than it was before that," Tuscaloosa city engineer David Griffin said.

Hansel Stewart believes the City Walk will allow Central Church of Christ to play a bigger role in the city.

"We want the community involved in our church. And we think this could be a great way to reach out to the community for spiritual needs and bringing people to Christ," Stewart said.
