How to exercise with your dog

How to exercise with your dog

By Kim Boatman

From The Dog Daily

The best workout partners never complain, bring unfailing energy to your exercise sessions and stick by your side rather than racing ahead or trailing behind. If it sounds like it would be tough to find someone to fit that description, it's time to consider a four-legged workout partner.

"For the most part, any dog can be a runner," says Lindsay Stordahl, a professional dog runner and walker who operates Run That Mutt in the Fargo-Moorhead area of North Dakota. Stordahl has covered more than 4,200 miles with clients' dogs. "People get too caught up over whether or not their dog can run. If you are not sure, then simply try."

ADMH Commissioner resigns, replacement appointed

ADMH Commissioner resigns, replacement appointed

MONTGOMERY, AL (WBRC)- Alabama Department of Mental Health Commissioner Zelia Baugh announced her resignation on Tuesday, citing family priorities as the reason she is leaving the position. Baugh will resign as of June 30, 2012.

"It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the people of this state. However, it has become increasingly apparent to me that my family priorities require most of my attention at this time," Baugh said in a statement to media.

"I believe the department is well-positioned to continue to make progress toward providing the highest caliber services to Alabamians with intellectual disabilities, mental illnesses, or substance addictions. Throughout the department, there are dedicated individuals who are making a positive difference in the lives of consumers and their families, and I am honored to have served as commissioner," Baugh said.

Red wine, weather may trigger migraines

Red wine, weather may trigger migraines

THURSDAY, June 21 (HealthDay News) -- New research may help answer the age-old question of whether factors such as the weather or drinking red wine can set off a migraine.

According to research presented this week at the annual meeting of the American Headache Society in Los Angeles, both of these factors can trigger the excruciating headaches, but not for all people and not all the time.

One small study looked at 33 adults in Brazil who considered themselves regular red-wine drinkers and believed that the beverage had caused migraines in the past. All were asked to drink half a bottle (375 milliliters) of a Malbec, Tannat, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot wine from South America at least four days apart.

FRIDAY, June 15 (HealthDay News) -- Move over, tiger moms. Dads can play an even more significant role in the development of happy, well-adjusted children than do mothers, a new study indicates.

Just in time for Father's Day, findings from a large-scale review of research shed light on how parental acceptance and rejection can affect the personalities of progeny well into adulthood.

"In our 50 years of research in every continent but Antarctica, we have found that nothing has as strong and consistent an effect on personality development as does being rejected by a parent -- especially by a father -- in childhood," said study co-author Ronald Rohner, director of the Ronald and Nancy Rohner Center for the Study of Interpersonal Acceptance and Rejection at the University of Connecticut, in Storrs.
