East Tuscaloosa health fair set for Saturday, Dec. 1

East Tuscaloosa health fair set for Saturday, Dec. 1

The Tuscaloosa Police Department and the University of Alabama's School of Social Work are teaming up to host a health fair on Saturday, Dec. 1 at the JC Fairgrounds.

The health fair is open to the public and a free shuttle service will be provided. The fairgrounds are located at 2145 6th St. E. Tuscaloosa, Al 35404

The health fair will offer free blood pressure and diabetes health screenings, plus face painting and other activities for the kids. There will also be a coat drive.

Deadline to enter Tuscaloosa Christmas Parade is Nov. 9

The Tuscaloosa Parks and Recreation Authority wants to remind anyone who'd like to enter a float in the annual Christmas parade without incurring additional fees must register by Friday, Nov. 9.

Non-judged entries have a registration fee of $25 and judged entries are $30. Please visit http://www.tcpara.org/ to print your registratio application and learn more about parade rules and routes.

However, if you miss the deadline tomorrow you can still register from Nov. 10-14 but your entry will be subject to an additional $15 fee.

The parade will be held Dec. 3 in downtown Tuscaloosa.

Community meeting on Alberta school rebuilding to be held Nov. 13

The Tuscaloosa City Schools will host a community meeting Tuesday, November 13 concerning the rebuilding of the Alberta school.  Alberta Elementary School was destroyed by the April 27, 2011 tornado and is currently operating in the Tuscaloosa Magnet Schools.

New exhibit honors Birmingham civil rights attorney

Beginning Sunday, a special exhibit honoring the life of Birmingham civil rights attorney Arthur Shores will be displayed at the Birmingham Public Library.

Shores is noted for being one of the lawyers who won the case that allowed the first black student to attend the University of Alabama in 1956. He was also the first black member of the Birmingham City Council in 1968. He was a high school principal at Dunbar High School in Bessemer and later became a lawyer in 1937, according to the Birmingham Historical Society.

The exhibit focuses on Shore’s life and career from 1939 until 1975. It includes a scrapbook of newspaper clippings, ads and other memorabilia Shores collected during his career.

The exhibit will be open from Sunday, Nov. 4 at 3 p.m. until Dec. 28 during regular business hours. It will be located on the 4th floor gallery of the Central Library.
