The August 16, 2011 application deadline for financial assistance to place an Individual Shelter (Safe Room) in homeowners’ primary residences is quickly approaching. In order to assist individuals who may still have questions concerning the application process, the City of Tuscaloosa is partnering with the Tuscaloosa County Emergency Management Agency to present a come-and-go workshop this Friday, August 12, from 3pm to 6pm at the Tuscaloosa Fire & Rescue Service Training and Logistics Facility, 2015 McFarland Blvd. East, Tuscaloosa, AL, 35404.
The Individual Shelter (Safe Room) Program may reimburse the homeowner 75 percent of the cost of the shelter, up to a maximum of $4,000. To qualify for reimbursement, the shelter must be installed by a licensed contractor, meet FEMA 320 standards and follow all applicable state and local code requirements. Completing an application is not a guarantee that the homeowner will receive a grant. Additionally, any funds spent prior to award of grant are not reimbursable.

Once the application is completed including the five required items, the homeowner may send it by certified mail to P.O. Box 2089, Tuscaloosa, AL 35403. The application may also be submitted in person at the EMA office located in the Tuscaloosa Fire & Rescue Service Training and Logistics Facility, 2015 McFarland Blvd. East, Tuscaloosa, AL, 35404 from 7:30am – 5pm, Monday through Friday.
