From the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama:

The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, along with sponsors Ellis Architects and Regions Bank, has announced plans for the ninth annual State of the Community breakfast to be held on Tuesday, November 8 at 7:30am at Hotel Capstone in Tuscaloosa.

The event is open to the public at no cost; however, reservations are required and encouraged. A continental breakfast will be available.

“It’s beneficial to have an annual report on the progress of our area and status of our local governments,” said Terry Waters, executive director of the Chamber.  “Over the past few years, this program has been well-received and informative."

Scheduled to participate in the annual breakfast are Probate Judge Hardy McCollum, Chairman of the Tuscaloosa County Commission; Mayor Walt Maddox of the City of Tuscaloosa; and Mayor Bobby Herndon of the City of Northport.

Statewide blanket drive held for displaced families

Statewide blanket drive held for displaced families

A little extra warmth in the form of a cozy blanket can go a long way on a cold winter night, especially for families who are homeless or displaced due to the tornadoes.

To help keep those families warm, Alabama's First Lady Dianne Bentley is continuing the seven year long tradition of collecting blankets and quilts for families in need with the "Blankets with a Blessing" initiative.

“As we approach the cold winter months, it is important that we remember those who have lost their homes, or have no permanent place to call home. In the days after the tornado outbreak in April, we saw Alabamians unite to help neighbors in need," Mrs. Bentley said. "As we approach the holiday season let us continue to help each other with warm blankets during the cold months.”

The blanket drive lasts from Nov. 3 through Nov. 15. The donated blankets will then be given to homeless families and people who have been temporarily displaced after the April 27 tornadoes.

The organization hopes to provide gifts to more than 4,000 Alabamians statewide this year and will accept gifts through Dec. 9.

Jennifer Hartley, executive director of Mental Health American of Alabama-Montgomery released this statement:

"Last year, thanks to the support and active participation of local churches, schools, businesses, organizations and individuals, we were able to fill around 600 Christmas wishes in the tri-county area. This year we hope to top 700."

Those who would like to donate gifts should consider the following guidelines:
