Alabama Forever Christmas ornament inspires hope

Alabama Forever Christmas ornament inspires hope

Alabama Forever, a non-profit dedicated to rebuilding and building hope in communties, is holding a holiday ornament sale. The laser-cut wooden ornament is in the same shape as the Alabama Forever necklace, but the cut out is in the shape of a cross instead of a heart. Each ornament is $30 and every cent will go to Alabama Forever.

The non-profit teamed with Jen Boaz and Maxine Orange to design the ornaments. Both women also helped with the necklace design. To purchase an ornament, visit The Pants store locations, Laura Kathryn Boutique in Crestline Village or on Etsy.com.

Alex Sokol, found of Alabama Forever, released the following statement about the sale:

West Alabama Christmas parade held Monday in Tuscaloosa

West Alabama Christmas parade held Monday in Tuscaloosa

The 36th annual West Alabama Christmas Parade will be held in Tuscaloosa Monday, Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. This year's theme, "A Christmas of Hope" will be displayed on a commemorative flag that will take the place of a grand marshal.

The flag's design includes the number 52, representing the number of Tuscaloosa citizens who lost their lives in the April 27 storms; a houndstooth ribbon of remembrance for everyone who was affected by the tornado; and a red rose to honor the first responders and volunteers who helped in the rescue and recovery following the tornado.

A total of 105 floats are a part of this year's parade, which begins on Greensboro Ave. at 14th Street and will travel north to University Blvd, turn east and end at the corner of University Blvd. and 19th Ave.

From the University of Alabama:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – University of Alabama College of Education student Rebecca Ellison and members of TuscMoms are organizing T-Town Toys for Hope, a holiday toy drive to benefit students of Alberta Elementary School, one of the area schools destroyed by the April 27 tornado.

Ellison said they are hoping to provide every student at the relocated Alberta Elementary with at least one gift-wrapped toy for Christmas.

Toy drive organizers are asking the community to donate new, unwrapped toys (valued at $20 or less) for students in pre-K- fifth grade by Sunday, Dec. 11. Suggested toys include building sets, craft or jewelry-making kits, pillow pets, board games, blocks, art supply kits, dolls, books and action figures.

Auburn mayor to make donation to recovery fund after Iron Bowl wager

Auburn mayor to make donation to recovery fund after Iron Bowl wager

Last week the respective mayor of Tuscaloosa and Auburn made a friendly Iron Bowl wager, and now Auburn mayor Bill Ham will make good on that bet. In the past the mayors have put each of their town's best barbecue on the line. But this year, in light of the tough year Alabama has faced due to storms and the challenging economy, the mayors promised to make donations to local charities if their team lost. Mayor Ham will make a donation to the City of Tuscaloosa Storm Recovery Fund this year.

Mayor Maddox said in a press release: “Mayor Ham is a great friend to the City of Tuscaloosa and me personally, so it is a lot of fun to make this wager. The Iron Bowl means so much to the citizens of our respective cities and the people of Alabama. [B]ut no matter what the outcome may be, I rest assured that these donations will help those in need.”
