ADECA loan helps Tuscaloosa business save energy

MONTGOMERY The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs today announced that The Westervelt Co. in Tuscaloosa will receive a $1.4 million loan to save energy and increase sustainability while providing work for contractors installing the energy-efficiency improvements.

The company is the latest business approved to participate in AlabamaSAVES, an ADECA program designed to help businesses install energy-saving upgrades, reduce operating expenses and boost employment.

“ADECA established AlabamaSAVES not only to help the state become more energy efficient, but also to increase economic opportunities for Alabamians,” ADECA Director Jim Byard Jr. said. “When a business becomes more efficient, it is better able to grow; that benefits our entire state, especially residents who need employment.”

40 students chosen for inaugural Mercedes-Benz program

Mercedes-Benz has chosen 40 students out of a total of 230 applicants to be a part of the inaugural class of Industrial Mecharonics Program at the plant. The program will provide the students with college and on-the-job training as well as classroom instruction at nearby Sheldon State Community College. Tuscaloosa– The Mercedes-Benz plant has launched its first class of students as part of the Mercedes-Benz Industrial Mechatronics Program.  The 40 candidates took part in orientation January 4th and 5th and will now spend the next two years attending Shelton State Community College and working in production at MBUSI.

Rainbow City wins food drive challenge

The generosity of the Rainbow City community was clear on Friday as residents gave hundreds of bags of food to needy families in a food drive challenge between Brunos and Food World locations.

The Rainbow Drive Food World in Rainbow City won the "Family to Family" food drive challenge with a grand total of 815 bags of groceries given to the drive, plus other donations. The food collected will go to the Community Food Bank of Central Alabama.

The Riverchase Village Brunos in Hoover came in second place with 740 bags. The Brunos on McFarland Blvd. in Tuscaloosa came in third place overall.

Meeting to discuss possible Postal Service move held tonight

The U.S. Postal Service will hold a public meeting Thursday, Dec. 15 to discuss the possible move of the U.S. Postal Service processing operation from the Tuscaloosa Customer Service Mail Processing Center to the Birmingham Processing and Distribution Center.

The meeting will be held at Stillman College, Cordell Wynn Humanities & Fine Arts Center, in the Warner Presentation Room, located at 3601 Stillman Blvd. in Tuscaloosa. It is scheduled to last from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
