First Minority Business Council workshop set

TUSCALOOSA, AL, July 26, 2012--The first Minority Business Council (MBC) Workshop is set for Thursday, August 9 from 8-11am at the Tuscaloosa Public Library in the Rotary Room. Attendees will explore the opportunities available for minority businesses in West Alabama and learn about resources available to support these businesses. Entitled Initiate the Advantage, it will feature speakers from state agencies presenting information on marketing, technology and funding sources. A continental breakfast will be provided. Stores prepare for sales tax holiday

Big Lots is just one of several Tuscaloosa-area stores that is gearing up for the upcoming tax holiday. Many shoppers are planning to do their back-to-school shopping during the holiday to save some money.

The holiday begins Friday, Aug. 3 and lasts until midnight on Sunday, Aug. 5.

Applications are now available for the 2012-13 class of Leadership Tuscaloosa. Entering its 30th year, this program provides an excellent opportunity for personal growth, leadership development and involvement for forty selected candidates.

With close to 1000 graduates to date, Leadership Tuscaloosa strives to provide a foundation of knowledge that potential leaders can use to aid in their involvement and success in community endeavors. It is our objective to help meet the community’s need for informed, responsible and effective leadership. TUSCALOOSA, AL, July 17, 2012--For over 35 years, the Northport Citizen of the Year Dinner has celebrated outstanding leadership in the city. Sponsored by The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, this award is given to an individual that has contributed to the improvement of Northport during the last year using their personal time, energy, and talents to improve the Northport community. Nominations are now needed and the process is open. Recipient must work and/or reside in Northport.

We are also seeking nominations for the Northport Educator of the Year, Religious Leader, Business Leader, Public Safety Leader, and Heritage Pioneer of the Year.

Gas prices drop under $3 in some Ala. cities

Gas prices are starting to dip just below $3 in some areas of Alabama, including the town of Sumiton on the Walker/Jefferson County line, where a gas price of $2.99 was spotted Thursday afternoon.

As of Friday, a couple gas stations in the Sumiton and Dora areas are still selling gas at $2.99 according to the gas price finder on www.MyFoxAl.com.
