Verizon announces 4G LTE network coming to Tuscaloosa, Auburn

Verizon Wireless announced Wednesday morning it will soon offer its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network in Tuscaloosa and Auburn. The 4G LTE network will be available in the coming weeks, according to a news release from Verizon Wireless.

With the 4G LTE network, Verizon customers will be able to access the Internet, listen tomusic, watch videos and use apps on smart phones with speeds up to 10 times faster, the company states.

Jonathan LeCompte, president of the Georgia/Alabama region for Verizon Wireless, says the new technology will benefit not only residents of Tuscaloosa and Auburn, but "also the hundreds of thousands of people who visit the [campuses] every year."

Verizon Wireless launched its 4G LTE network service in December 2010. More than 200 million have access to the network, which supports more than 20 4G LTE devices, including tablets, smart phones and hotspots.

Storms developing Wednesday afternoon

Storms developing Wednesday afternoon

Rain and thunderstorms will likely begin moving into west Alabama this afternoon.  If the storms become severe, damaging winds and hail are our primary threats.  There is a very low chance of tornadoes with this system.
Storms should weaken overnight with the loss of daytime heating, but another round of thunderstorms is expected on the Thursday as the front is expected to move through our state.

Friday morning only brings a slight chance of showers, with clouds decreasing during the afternoon.

Saturday and Sunday look fantastic with dry air, cooler temps and mostly sunny skies.

A very slight chance of rain is in the works for Monday.

Next Tuesday and Wednesday should be partly cloudy with noticeably cooler temperatures.

Alabama beats South Alabama, 9-5

MOBILE, Ala.  – Alabama collected 13 hits and Ben Moore and Taylor Dugas had three hits each, as the Alabama baseball team posted a 9-5 win over South Alabama at Stanky Field on Tuesday night. With the win, the Crimson Tide snaps a five-game losing skid.

The 13 hits against the Jaguars (11-18) marks the fourth straight game the Crimson Tide (10-19) has had double-digits in hits. Combined with a 4-3 win over the Jaguars back on Feb. 28, the Tide swept the season series against South Alabama.

"First of all it's good to get a win when you're struggling the way we have been," UA head coach Mitch Gaspard said. "I'm happy for our players. They have been playing hard through all the struggles and this is a good win and tonight was a clean game for us."

Court docs reveal new details in air show accident

Danny Ray Smith, 64, is accused of driving under the influence of alcohol when, according to police, he struck and killed a little girl and injured her mother and sister after the Regional Air Show.

The court documents reveal more details about what happened on Saturday in Northport. Police say the Burks family was enjoying the air show while Smith was hosting a watch party at his business, Dixie Air.

Around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Tanya Burks, along with her two children, were walking in the grass next to 5th Street in Northport.

Court documents say a black 2008 GMC Sierra, driven by Smith, veered onto the shoulder of the road and hit Tanya Burks and her children. A witness told police that the truck kept going for another 100 to 200 yards.
